Like many other third world countries, India’s urban population is
increasing very slowly. Despite the growing migration from rural to urban
areas, the population living in the urban areas is only 25 to 30 per cent. The
increase in the urban population from 1901 to 1991 has only been 15 per cent,
i.e., the population has increased from 10.8 per cent to 25.8 per cent.
