Which are the major nutritional problems in India?

  1. Surveys indicate that the major bottleneck in Indian diet is shortage of calories.
Against a recommended allowance of 2400 calories for an average male adult
engaged in sedentary occupation, the typical Iiidian diet hardly supplies 2,000
calories: The specific nutritional problem in the country is: Protein -Calorie
Malnutrition: Insufficiency of calories—the so called good gap appears to be the
chief cause of protein -calorie malnutrition. Its incidence among rural children is
very high in different parts of the country. The children's healthcare situation is
equally bad. While some diseases have been controlled to a large extent others
continue to wreak havoc. Over 1.25 million children die annually in India. 48 per
cent of all children have stunted growth due to malnutrition.
