A recurrent
concern in many societies is that not all groups reproduce at the same rate. In
retrospect, there has been increasing evidence that the growth of population
has been fluctuating in many parts of the world. In many Asian countries,
population growth has been curbed at a pace much faster than most of the
demographers had anticipated earlier. In Western countries, the rate of growth
of population is optimum or is on the verge of growth. This tremendous
fluctuation in the growth of population or reproduction rate worldwide mainly
depends on the rate of fertility and the differentiation in fertility rate
termed as differential fertility.
