In India, the age of marriage is still very low and the preference
for a son still exists in the minds of Indians even today. Literacy rates are
low, particularly in the case of females. Male-female ratio is becoming
increasingly unfavourable to women and mortality rates are to be reduced
futher. The birth rate in india is so high that it is higher than what the
economy can sustain at the existing level of development. A table shows that
since 1951 our population has more than doubled and in 1993, the population of
India was above 88 corre. It is the ever-growing numbers which have made our
population a matter of serious concern. Planning for such a large population is
very hard task.
